Jio on Wednesday announced the launch of 25000 km long Asia-Africa-Europe submarine cable system. Called as AAE-1, it would be the longest 100 Gbps tech based submarine system in the world which will stretch over a distance of 25000 km.
It will deliver up to 40 Terabits of new capacity in the regions and will help in coping with the rising demand of video content in India as well as adjacent nations. It will support all types of communications and content within India and beyond.
A submarine cable system basically consists of internet & telecom cables on a seabed between a land-based station and carries telecommunication and other data signals across stretches of oceans. This new cable system will go from Marseille in France to all the way to Hong Kong & there would be 21 cable landings across the Europe & Asia.
As per Jio, they have worked closely with telecom providers from the Middle East, Europe, and Asia to contribute to this cable network. The telecom providers are China Unicom, Telecom Egypt, Etisalat, Tele Yemen, Omantel, GT5L, Jio and many others. The Point of Presence is in Hong Kong & Singapore and three onwards connectivity options in Europe via Italy, France & Greece.
The new cable will also cater the increasing demand of the internet in Asia. It should be noted that India is the world’s second largest telecom market and is on the way to becoming the first. Streaming music and videos on the web were considered as a luxury before the launch of Jio but since the inception of Jio, things have changed a lot. Now, most of the people prefer to stream the content instead of downloading it.
“The new terabit capacity and 100Gbps direct connectivity to global content hubs and interconnection points ensure that Jio will continue to offer its customers the most exceptional high-speed internet and digital service experience,” said Mathew Oommen, President-Jio. “We are excited to participate in the launch and deliver the cable landing in Mumbai at the time when India’s data traffic continues its accelerated data consumption and growth,” he added.
It should be noted that Reliance Jio is currently the fastest growing telecom provider in the world with over millions of users using it in a span of few months from its day of launch. It would be interesting to see the monopoly of Jio in the data market and how others telecom providers will react once, this cable system goes live.
